8-11 April 2013, Swansea University, Wales
Professor Michael Elliott
Director of the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS) and Professor of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences at the University of Hull. Lead author of the report “Burry Inlet Cockle Mortalities Investigation 2009-2011” for the Environment Agency Wales.
Professor Ken Pye
Director of Kenneth Pye Associates Ltd. Specialises in geomorphological and sedimentological investigations, in particular related to coastal estuarine and marine environments, infrastructure developments, habitat re-creation, risk assessment and incident investigations.
Professor Tim Jickells
Tim Jickells is professor of environmental sciences at the University of East Anglia. His research focuses on ocean biogeochemistry with a special emphasis on atmospheric inputs and cycling of carbon and nutrients. He is also interested as to how this knowledge can support coastal management.
In 1976 scientists organised a symposium at the University College of Swansea with the title 'Problems of a Small Estuary'. It was a gathering of geomorphologists, hydrologists, fisheries experts, biologists and governmental managers who discussed issues affecting small estuaries, in particular the Burry Inlet (Loughor Estuary, South Wales).
Similarly, the 2013 Symposium, co-hosted by the ECSA and SEACAMS, was attended by scientists from a variety of fields from across Europe. Delegates heard about tiny estuaries in Mallorca, cockle population dynamics across the UK and France, the effect of dam building on phytoplankton in Portugal, salt marsh remediation efforts in England, and nutrient dynamics in estuaries. We thank all the presenters, especially our keynote speakers, who gave fascinating insights into their respective fields, while also providing platforms for debate.

Papers from the 2013 Symposium on the Problems of Small Estuaries will be published following peer-review in the journal 'Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science'.
Authors who would like to contribute should contact Dr. Ruth Callaway if they have not done so already.
Updates and deadlines for submission will be posted here.
