The Reaching Wider Partnership

The South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership aims to increase participation in higher education by people from underrepresented groups and communities in South West Wales with a specific focus on Communities First areas, looked after children and care leavers.

We are funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales Reaching Wider Programme and our partners are Swansea University, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, The Open University in Wales, Coleg Sir Gâr, Gower College Swansea, Neath Port-Talbot Group of Colleges, Pembrokeshire College, Careers Wales, local authorities and schools in South West Wales.

Through collaboration, we offer a range of learning and aspiration-raising activities for targeted children, young people and adults across South West Wales which create pathways to higher education. We work mainly with schools and families and offer activities ranging from short study skills sessions to a three-week residential Summer School.

Feedback from teachers about the programme:

“Over the past 5 years Cefn Hengoed pupils have benefitted greatly from the Reaching Wider programme…without doubt the programme has been instrumental in the improved academic outcomes of our pupils.” Teacher from Cefn Hengoed Community School

Involvement in the Reaching Wider scheme by the cohort who have recently left the school (July 2014) has been extremely valuable in motivating pupils and directing them to consider Higher Education.  It is rare for more than a small number of pupils from Communities First areas to progress to attend University and I believe that the activities delivered by Reaching Wider will almost certainly encourage this cohort to give significant thought to doing so.  In addition, all the activities have been of high quality and very well received by the pupils introducing new ways of learning in different environments." Teacher from Dylan Thomas Community School

“The links with Reaching Wider have been invaluable to me as a Progress Manager in providing the necessary support to pupils with study skills etc.  Although the same information is delivered by teachers, the pupils are far more receptive to the university students!   The support in raising aspirations, especially in this catchment area was great, many pupils other than those expected, expressed interest in going to university following their visits to the university or after discussing courses with mentors.  The work of the Reaching Wider team definitely enhanced the learning experiences of my year group and for that I am very grateful.” Teacher from Cwrt Sart Community Comprehensive School

“The Reaching Wider programme…motivates our students and helps focus their thinking. I have never had any negative feedback.” Teacher from St Josephs' School and Sixth Form

“All teachers who have been involved with activities have been very enthusiastic and felt that they benefitted the pupils very much, both academically and in broadening their experience.” Teacher from Upper Afan Valley Federation School
