Professor Gert Aarts, of Swansea University’s College of Science and Physics Department, is currently training the next generation of doctoral researchers in the study of quarks and gluons under extreme conditions, at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*) in Trento, Italy.
With about 40 students coming from Europe, Brazil, the USA, Japan, India, China and Iran, it is a truly international affair, reflecting the global research programme in extreme matter.
During the four-week programme, the PhD students will take lectures from outstanding scientists, present their own work in flash talks and work together to master the material. Professor Aarts is co-organising the Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) with Prof Dirk Rischke from the Goethe University, Frankfurt.
Professor Aarts said: “It is an exciting opportunity to bring together such a diverse group of PhD students. Since most of them are at the beginning of their scientific career, they have the opportunity to learn from each other while also building connections which may last a lifetime.
“Our training programme starts with fundamental theoretical physics and ends with applications to the experimental heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Our hope is that through our DTP the participants will be even better prepared to deliver important scientific contributions in the field of extreme matter.”
ECT* is the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas. It is partly funded through STFC, the UK Research Council covering Particle and Nuclear Physics.
