Swansea University named top LGBT and Trans Employer

Swansea University has been named a top LGBT employer and top Trans employer in the annual Stonewall Work Equality Index.

stw top 100 employersThis year Swansea University has been ranked 29th out of the UK’s top 100 employers, up two places from last year.  The University also appears in the Stonewall Top Trans Employers list, of which there are only 11 organisations in the UK and has been named as a Highly Commended Network Group for the second year running.

In 2017, Swansea University was ranked at number 31 out of 100 – placing Swansea second of all participating universities. This represented a rise of 205 places in three years, from the University’s ranking of 236 in 2014.

Stonewall’s latest Workplace Equality Index received submissions from over 434 UK businesses and institutions with over 92,000 employees completing a staff survey nationally.

The Annual Index is used to assess a workplace’s achievements and progress on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusion and is a powerful benchmarking tool ‌used by employers to create inclusive workplaces.

Swansea’s best practice includes:

  • the development of bespoke guidance on how to support trans staff
  • strong links and regular collaboration with local LGBT+ community groups
  • regular policy review to ensure all policies are fully inclusive
  • embedding LGBT+ equality into all staff training and line manager training
  • the development of innovative interactive training sessions to dispel myths and increase understanding of LGBT+ people.
