Swansea University launch TASS Dual Career Accreditation programme

Swansea University has officially launched its Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme that will help a select group of students from the University balance their academic study with high performance sport.

Swansea is leading the way in Wales by supporting talented athletes in education, having become the first institution outside of England to be awarded the TASS Dual Career Accreditation.

TASS is a Sport England funded partnership between talented athletes, education institutions and national governing bodies of sport. The Scheme helps athletes in education – aged 16-plus – to get the very best from their sporting and academic careers without having to choose between the two.

Swansea University has a proud sporting history, with a number of students having featured in both Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Swimmer Jazz Carlin was a double Olympic silver medallist for Team GB in Rio in 2016, while fellow Welsh star Georgia Davies has featured in two Olympics and two Commonwealth Games.

As a TASS Dual Career Accredited Centre, Swansea University will be an important extension to the existing TASS Delivery Site network by providing student-athletes with the opportunity to access online notes or resources, arrange catch up sessions with lecturers, or even reschedule deadlines or exam dates in exceptional circumstances.

Professor Martin Stringer, Pro-Vice Chancellor at Swansea University, said: “We are very proud to become a TASS Dual Career Accredited Centre. It builds on our strong sporting tradition and recognises the excellence of our teaching and student support.

“The recognition of becoming an accredited centre will also help us to attract a greater number of talented athletes to the University, as well as building connections with other local sporting institutions.”

TASS National Director, Guy Taylor, said: “We’re delighted to have awarded Swansea University the TASS Dual Career Accreditation.

“Dual career support is at the forefront of what TASS does and that’s why it is so important for us to recognise those institutions who place precedence on their athletes’ education too.

“Congratulations to Swansea University and we look forward to working alongside them in the near future.”
