Swansea can be where the future happens first: tidal lagoon news welcomed by Swansea University

Professor Iwan Davies, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University, has welcomed the recommendation of the Hendry Review that the tidal lagoon should go ahead in Swansea Bay.

Responding to the recommendation, Professor Davies, said:

“This is excellent news, as the tidal lagoon would be a major boost to the University, Swansea and the wider region.

Swansea has a proud history of innovation: from copper and steel to the world’s first passenger railway. The lagoon would show that, once again, Swansea can be where the future happens first.

The University has been at the heart of innovation in the Swansea Bay region for nearly one hundred years. The lagoon will be built on the University’s own beach at our stunning new Bay Campus. When the lagoon is built Swansea University will be the only university in the world with a lagoon on our own beach. It would enhance the water sporting opportunities available and improve still further the unrivalled student experience we can offer.

We also look forward to continuing our research collaboration with the Tidal Lagoon Company, bringing our expertise in marine engineering. At the Bay Campus our new Energy Safety Research Institute houses facilities that can support tidal lagoon technology.

The review is a very important step forward in gaining the necessary approvals for the lagoon. We look forward to seeing it progress further.”
