Following the helpful advice given to him at a University Open Day in July engineering student Andrew Robinson successfully secured a prestigious Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) scholarship.
Before he had even settled into University life at Swansea Andrew travelled up to London last week to receive his IMechE ‘Amec Foster Wheeler Clean Energy’ Undergraduate Scholarship.
Upon receiving his award Andrew, who comes from Chippenham, Wiltshire said:
“My commitment to engineering comes from a desire to discover and solve engineering problems and extend my knowledge of engineering principles. I was really pleased to have been accepted by Swansea University to study a BEng Mechanical Engineering degree, with a year in industry, and was looking forward to starting the course in September.
“ Before starting at the University I decided to take the advice offered to me at the July Open Day visit and applied for the IMechE Undergraduate Scholarship.
“ For the application I was challenged to identify solutions to the problem of the accumulation of ‘space junk’ orbiting earth, for which I advocated sustainable strategies. In addition I was asked about previous work placements and engineering work I have conducted and presented. I then attended an interview at IMechE in London at the end of August.
“ I was literally ‘over the moon’ to hear that I had been successful and been awarded the IMechE ‘Amec Foster Wheeler Clean Energy’ Undergraduate Scholarship. And last Thursday I attended the awards ceremony at IMech in London where 7 undergraduate awards were presented.
“I want to thank the Engineering Department for advertising the scholarship at the open day and for encouraging me to apply as the scholarship will enable me to continue my professional development alongside my University studies. “
