Statement from Professor Richard B. Davies Vice-Chancellor on reallocation of student numbers

Swansea University is committed to providing an excellent academic student experience, and our fee plan reflects this, enabling us to safeguard and improve teaching and learning standards despite reduced government funding. We will therefore not be altering our proposed fee level in the light of the HEFCW announcement on the reallocation of student numbers.

This is consistent with the advice of HEFCW and the Minister for Education and Skills that “Swansea University should remain committed to securing its position as a research intensive institution”.

Our vision to be a world class, research-led University, delivering an outstanding student experience, is reflected in our ambitious campus development and expansion programme, including our planned new Science and Innovation Campus. Supported by the Welsh Government, this will provide a catalyst for innovation and high-level skills and be a major driver in the economic regeneration of the whole region.

Our financial position remains strong, and a one-off reduction in home and EU undergraduate student numbers, although totally unexpected and unwelcome, will not move the University off course. As we move towards our centenary in 2020 we will continue to deliver strongly as a balanced university. We remain confident that this reallocation of numbers will not adversely affect our building for future excellence.
