Do I need a visa?

Most nationals need a visa to enter India. Find out if you need one from the Indian Visa Application Centre (London) website.

What type of visa do I need?

  • Exchange students – Entry Visa category (issued to those invited to India for exchanges, visits, study tours and other activities)
  • Tourist – Visa category for  people visiting India for recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives, etc

When should I apply?

Roughly one month before intended entry to India. Visas may only be valid for 3 months. The visa starts as soon as it is granted.

Applying too early may result in you not getting your visa to cover you for the whole duration of your visit.

How do I apply?

  1. Either complete an online application or download and fill a paper application form
  2. Print off the application form and sign the form
  3. Download and sign the Declaration
  4. Book an appointment online to submit your application and documents at the VFS Application Centre. You will be able to book an appointment on VFS Website  at the time of filing online application forms.
  5. Biometric Data collection, including fingerprint data and facial imagery will be a mandatory requirement for all visa applicants soon. As a result, all visa applicants will need to first apply online and, thereafter, be physically present (mandatorily) at India Visa and Consular Services centres, by appointment, for submission of visa application and biometric data enrolment.

What documents do I need?

  • Passport (with 6 months validity)
  • Visa application form
  • Photo
  • Your UK visa
  • Photocopy of any previous Indian visas
  • Swansea University Student Statement (from Academic Registry) to confirm you are a full-time enrolled student
  • Official invitation letter from Indian university (if you are going for an exchange programme) – The International Development Office (IDO) will obtain this letter for you
