Priyani Patel, BSc Audiology
What did you enjoy the most about the course and studying at Swansea University?
I enjoyed making new friends and moving away from home the most at university. There were only 7 on my course and around 30 healthcare students, so over the 4 years I was able to form really close friendships- I'm still friends with most of them. The thought of moving so far was scary but it soon became like home and I really miss it now!
What skills did you learn from completing the course and how did they help you get a job?
During the course we were required to go to different hospital placements; which were all based around Wales, these prepared me for working in a real audiology department and seeing real patients. The different placement experiences meant that I was able to put theory into practice and be ready for work once I graduated. I also learnt how to use a variety of equipment and software which I believe made me stand out when applying for jobs.
What have you gone on to do after graduating?
I graduated at the end of May, and started my new permanent contract job in July at London North West healthcare trust. I work across sites at Northwick park hospital and Central Middlesex hospital.
What are you enjoying about your current job?
I am enjoying being qualified and not being a student anymore. I can work independently and don’t have to be shadowed. I am also enjoying learning more and developing the skills I have already learnt from doing the course.
What would your advice be to new students?
My advice would be to do work experience in an audiology department before applying. I think it is so important to make sure that it is something you really want to pursue as a career because the course required a lot of commitment and lengthy placements and if you are not enjoying the job you will not enjoy the degree.
Priyani completed her Audiology degree in 2013.
