Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Electronic & Electrical at Swansea

From Power Electronics to NanoElectronics shaping our future, Electronic and Electrical Engineering is amongst the most exciting degree subjects available to a university student.

Our internationally-renowned research in power electronics, telecommunications, nanotechnology and biometrics feeds back into our electrical engineering degree courses to keep them up-to-date and relevant to industry.

The Electronic Systems Design Centre (ESDC) is known for its ground-breaking research into Power IC technology, the key technology for more energy efficient electronics. The Centre is also a world-leader in semiconductor device modelling, FEM and compact modelling.

The Research Quality in Electronic and Electrical Engineering is ranked 10th in the UK by The Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2017.

Accreditation

The BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).  An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).  A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Industry Experience

Year In Industry

Many of our students at Swansea University choose to spend a Year in Industry as part of their degree, which can have huge benefits for the company involved and the student working within the company.

A Year in Industry can be taken as part of a BEng or MEng degree programme.

As part of your undergraduate course, a Year in Industry can provide a great enhancement to your degree and future career.

Get more information about our Year in Industry here.

We also offer Year Abroad schemes too - find out more about these on the course pages.

Placements

Through Swansea University's Paid Internship Network we seek to connect our students to employers for graduate level placements. We offer paid internships between June and September each summer. All participating students receive a free employability master-class and are assessed via a mandatory employability assessment centre.

Find more information about our Work Placements here.

‌The International Development Office have opportunities for students to gain international work experience and take part in work abroad programmes as part of the degree (depending on scheme). Summer work placements are also available. Find out more about working abroad here.

Haydn Foster, Graduate Engineer at MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association)

Haydn Foster

““I believe that studying various modules in a vast range of topics helped greatly with both the initial and final interview stages for my graduate job.

MIRA were especially interested in students who had undertaken the Year in Industry programme, so this was a great advantage for both the application and the interview.

I think my best memory of the course, besides my Year in Industry at Red Bull, would be the micromouse project in the second year.

It was a great opportunity to work with some new people and bring ideas together to create an automated robot. Then being able to see the work pay off in the three challenges at the end of the module was a great and exciting experience.”
